Photo Caddy iPhone App

Vertical Campus

PhotoCaddy is an iPhone app that acts like your own personal photography expert. Users can collect information for each shot—the aperture, shutter speed, geolocation, camera model, lens, and more—based on the EXIF format used by photo-sharing sites like Flickr. I was asked by a colleague to help produce the prototype, and design both the user interface (UI) and user experience design (UX) for this app.

The Approach

Lean UX
With limited time and resources, I chose the Lean UX design approach to create the rapid prototype, and skipped the traditional process of wireframe -> sitemap -> flow diagrams. This allowed me to quickly move from concept to prototype, and then to user testing. And because the end user is very visual (photographers), the high-fidelity prototype was able to yield much better results than coding without proper UI.

Marketing Persona

Since this app was first developed for iOS, the target market was iPhone owners. Additionally, this group of users cared about improving their photography skills, and were willing to download a tool to improve their photos.

The Whole Experience

We went through multiple scenarios based on persona and mapped out the experience points. This helped us focus on the features we critically needed and determine which were “good to have.”

Build the Prototype

After gathering the required features, I designed the interface from the ground up. I started with sketches, moved them into Photoshop/SKETCH, and began to stitch the pieces together. I then created a consistent navigation pattern. To develop the interaction quickly, we opted to use Marvel, a free online prototyping tool. The PSD/SKETCH sync feature worked great with rapid prototyping and we had interactions that were rich enough for user testing.
